    If you have been researching the recently flourishing cannabis industry in the UK, and the booming amount of different products available, it is most likely that you've come across something called CBDa. But do you really know what it is?

    CBDa stands for cannabidiolic acid and is a cannabinoid much like CBD. In fact, it is found in large quantities in hemp and cannabis plants just like CBD.

    Hemp and cannabis plants actually produce CBDa first, and can be considered the parent molecule of CBD. CBD is only created once CBDa is heated through a process called decarboxylation.

    When CBDa is exposed to high temperatures, it is then broken up to form carbon dioxide and hydrogen that then creates CBD.

    CBDa is usually found in pure and organic hemp seed oil, since it does not go through the same extraction and distillation processes as the extractions intended to make CBD do.

    Of course, there's always a level of CBDa in hemp and cannabis plants, which is why it can be found in hemp seed oil, but obtaining pure or isolated CBDa is a very difficult process, therefore, it is quite sought-after and valued within the CBD community.

    Much like all of the other cannabinoids that are being sold on the market today, CBDa has a few different uses, especially when it comes to cosmetics and supplements. As of now, people are still researching what other types of uses it can have, and whether or not it has any benefits. But what we do know is that it adds a lot of nutrition to hemp seed oil, and that it could do the same for other products.

    What is the difference between CBD and CBDA?

    The answer to this is quite simple. pta is what the hemp and cannabis plants produce before converting it into CBD and other cannabinoids. CBDa is a cannabidiolic acid, which is then synthesized into CBD and other components.

    CBD, on the other hand, is also a cannabinoid, but it is the product of what happens when CBDa is refined and converted into a different cannabinoid within the hemp and cannabis plants.

    In terms of origin, both cannabinoids are found in hemp and cannabis plants, and don't have much difference there. But when it comes to extracting and obtaining CBD and CBDa, that is where the main difference is coming. CBDa isn't usually isolated or sold on its own. But CBD, on the other hand, as you may know, is distilled and isolated from other components in hemp and cannabis plants in order to be sold in isolate form, diluted into CBD oil form, or many other presentations.

    So, the main difference is their actual chemical structure and the way that they are both obtained. But other than that, CBD and CBDa are both cannabinoids that react with the endocannabinoid system within our bodies, they are both obtained from the same plant, and they are both currently a focal point in today's cannabis industry.

    Pros of CBDa

    • CBDa is usually directly taken from raw cannabis and hemp. The best source to acquire CBDa from is raw hemp and cannabis plants. By raw, it means that it is taken directly from a cannabis or hemp plant that has not been processed in any way, and has not even been dried out. In fact, when juicing raw hemp and cannabis plants, there is a very large concentration of CBDa in the final product, since it is in raw plants that CBDa can be found in the largest concentrations. This means that in order to get CBDa, they don't have to any processing, distillations or refinements.
    • According to many, CBDa is great when used with other cannabis derivatives such a CBD. As mentioned above, CBDa is mostly found in raw hemp seed oil, meaning, that there is also a percentage of CBDa inside raw hemp seed oil, and many say that when CBD is used with other cannabinoids such a CBDa, and with other natural components in cannabis and hemp plants, that it creates an altogether better outcome, and that it boosts CBDs nutritional value. This is referred to as the Entourage effect.
    • CBDa is non-psychoactive, just like CBD. This is another similarity between CBD and CBDa. By law, CBDa can contain miniscule traceable amounts of THC, just like CBD. If it contains anything over 0.02% THC, then it is illegal to buy, sell or consume; just like CBD. But fortunately, CBDa does not produce any psychoactive effects on its own and it is in no way similar to THC. Meaning you do not have to worry about feeling inhibited or high in any way when taking CBDa!

    • CBDa can easily decarboxylate. Given that it is an acid, the exposure to light, heat, and other things can cause it to decarboxylate, which is quite unfortunate, given that it ceases to become CBDa. A fun fact about this, though, is that CBD a, when it decarboxylates, actually turns into CBD. This can be a pro or con, depending on how you see it, but if you wanted to have CBDa, and it suddenly turns into CBD, then it can definitely become a hassle.
    • CBDa is not as popular, and therefore it can be harder to find on its own. CBDa is, quite, unfortunately, very much overshadowed by CBD in today's cannabis industry. This, of course, does not mean that you cannot find it anywhere, it just means that it's not as easily accessible, and not as often seen in supplement stores. But, you can always find a way, and you can always keep in mind that pure hemp seed oil contains a certain level of CBDa, and that can also be used to your advantage when CBDa is nowhere to be found.
    • There is not enough research on CBDa, and therefore we do not know too much about it. Despite the fact that it was first discovered in 1968, due to the lack of technology that we have experienced up to a few years ago, CBDa has-been widely left out of many studies, and continues to be what many people call neglected in that aspect. Though there are a few people working on finding out more about CBDa and what types of uses it can have, many of its qualities remain unknown to us due to the lack of technology, and the lack of research funding. This is not to say that it will not be further investigated in the future, or that the few studies about CBDa going on now will not produce any answer is, it just means that, as of now, we really don't know much about CBDa.

    So, as you now know, CBDa is very similar to CBD in many aspects and very different to it in others. We encourage you to look for products such as broad-spectrum CBD or full spectrum CBD oils in order to also find yourself a great source of CBDa, along with other cannabinoids!
