Due to CBD being associated with THC, many people immediately like pairing them together and mistakenly assume that they are the same thing. However, although CBD might come from hemp and cannabis, it is not smoked in a bong, and it is not the same ‘high-causing’ component.
CBD is one of the 113 cannabinoids found in the hemp and marijuana plant. It is 100% non-psychoactive, meaning that it doesn’t cause a ‘high’ in users.
Simply because CBD is associated with THC, many think that it is an addictive, drug-like substance. However, this actually is quite far from the truth about this natural, non-psychoactive compound.
CBD vs THC. What's the Difference?
As mentioned above, CBD and THC are often misconstrued as being the same thing because they are both from Hemp and Cannabis plants.
THC is the cannabinoid in the Cannabis plants that give the psychoactive effects of feeling "high". When it enters your bloodstream (usually through your lungs from smoking) and then into your brain, it stimulates the part of your brain that responds to sources of pleasure and releases a chemical called dopamine.
CBD, on the other hand, activates receptors in the brain for serotonin and adenosine. Which is why it is said to have many healing properties. However, many studies are still being done to find out the extent of Cannabidiol's healing properties.
CBD and THC react with the brain in two completely different ways, and CBD does not cause any mind-altering effects in any way whatsoever. There are even some studies that say CBD can block the psychoactive effects of THC, however, there still is not enough substantial evidence to say so.
CBD is Not Addictive
The answer to the commonly asked question, “Is CBD addictive” is no, CBD has not been shown to be addictive. From all the tests and studies on CBD, there have been none that point to the fact that CBD is addictive.
One of the most detailed studies on the possible addictiveness or potential abuse of CBD was done by the World Health Organization (WHO), and it was able to shine new light on the grey area around CBD and finally calm people's fear about the addictiveness of CBD.
The WHO stated, "the evidence from well-controlled human experimental research indicated that CBD is not associated with abuse potential". They also stated that through these tests, they found that "CBD was placebo-like on all measures (including visual analogue scales, psychomotor performance, heart rate and blood pressure)”.

So, CBD is non-addictive and can possibly block the mind-altering effects of THC. Although CBD is now considered a wonderful alternative to other addictive medications and substances, there is still a lot we would like to know about this substance, and a lot that it may be hiding behind its ‘surface’.
It will, of course, continue to be a widely used component, and its future is very dependant on the current research being done on it. Making it a grey area when it comes to proof of the benefits of this component and what it can offer its users.
Now that CBD is growing more widely in popularity, and there are more people interested in the benefits it can offer, there will definitely be more to learn and know about this natural, ‘healthier’ alternative.
